Chewbie Privacy Policy
Effective date: 11 October 2026
Chewbie ("the app") is a meal and macro tracker published by NexusLeap LLC, New Jersey, USA ("we", "us"). This policy explains what data the app handles and where it goes. The short version: your food log stays on your phone, and the only data that leaves the device is what is needed to analyse a photo, look up a barcode, or process a subscription.
Consent
On first launch the app shows a disclaimer (not medical advice, AI estimates may be wrong, adults only, photos are sent for analysis) and asks you to accept it together with the Terms of Use and this policy. The accepted version and time are stored on your device only.
Data stored on your device
- Profile: gender, age, height, current and goal weight, activity level, goal, and the calorie and macro targets calculated from them.
- Meal log: the meals you confirm, their items, estimated portions, calories and macros, timestamps, and an optional short health note returned by the AI.
- Meal photos: a compressed copy of each photo you log, saved in the app's private storage.
- Scan counter: how many AI scans you have used today (free tier only).
- Weigh-ins: the weights you log and the day you logged them.
- Water log: how much water you log each day, if you use the water tracker.
- Saved recipes: meals you choose to keep for one-tap logging.
- Learned portion sizes: when you change an AI portion estimate, the app keeps the AI's number and yours, per food, so it can adjust future estimates. You can view and erase this list in Settings → Learned portion sizes.
- Preferences: reminder schedules (weigh-in and meals), units, water goal, appearance, and which suggestions you have switched on or dismissed.
- Health Connect data (optional): if you turn on the sync, weights and daily step counts read from Health Connect are stored in your local weight log and shown on the dashboard, in Progress and in the weekly recap.
- Home-screen widget data: if you add the widget, today's calorie totals and water are copied into a private file the widget reads. It shows nothing else and sends nothing anywhere.
The app analyses this data on your phone to spot meals you eat often, to chart your progress, to adjust portion estimates to your corrections, and to suggest a calorie target that matches how your weight is actually moving. That analysis never leaves the device.
Sharing: the optional "Share today" card is an image of the day's calories, macros, streak, meal count and water, drawn on your phone. It is handed to the app you pick in the system share sheet, and to nothing else. It never includes photos, your profile or your food list.
This data is stored in a local SQLite database and the app's private files directory. It is not uploaded to any Chewbie server, because there is no Chewbie server. Deleting the app deletes all of it. You can also clear meal history or reset the app from Settings. Step-by-step deletion instructions, including for data held by service providers, are at Delete your Chewbie data.
Data sent to third parties
Google Gemini (photo analysis and add-item estimates)
When you scan a plate, the app sends the compressed photo (long edge 1024 px, no location metadata) to Google's Gemini API to identify foods and estimate nutrition. When you type a missing item, the text you typed is sent instead. Photos are not linked to your name or profile. Google's handling of this data is governed by the Gemini API terms.
Open Food Facts (barcode lookup)
When you scan a barcode, the barcode number is sent to the Open Food Facts public database to fetch the product's nutrition label. No other data is sent.
RevenueCat and Google Play Billing (subscriptions)
If you subscribe to Chewbie Pro, the purchase is processed by Google Play. RevenueCat receives an anonymous app-user identifier and purchase receipts to manage your entitlement. RevenueCat does not receive your meal data or photos. See the RevenueCat privacy policy.
Firebase Crashlytics (crash reports)
If the app crashes, an anonymous report is sent to Firebase Crashlytics (a Google service) so the crash can be fixed. A report contains the device model, operating system version, app version, the code location of the crash and a Crashlytics-generated installation identifier. It never contains your meals, photos, profile or any text you typed. You can turn crash reporting off at any time in Settings → "Send anonymous crash reports". See the Firebase privacy documentation.
Health Connect (optional)
Health Connect is Android's on-device health data store. If you turn on the sync in Settings → Health Connect, Chewbie asks Health Connect for permission to read weight, write weight and read steps:
- Weight: weigh-ins recorded by your scale or other apps appear in your weight trend, and weigh-ins you log in Chewbie are written to Health Connect so your other apps see them. Entries you typed in Chewbie always take precedence over imported ones for the same day.
- Steps: your daily step count is shown on the dashboard, in Progress, in the weekly recap and on the share card. Steps do not change your calorie target.
This data is used only on your phone. It is never sent to Chewbie, Google Gemini, RevenueCat, Firebase or anyone else, and it is not used for advertising or sold. You can switch the sync off in Settings, or revoke Chewbie's access in the Health Connect app, at any time; weights already imported stay in your local log until you delete them (Progress → Entries, or Settings → Reset app). Chewbie's use of Health Connect data follows the Health Connect permissions policy.
What the app does not do
- No account or sign-in is required.
- No advertising SDKs, and no analytics beyond the optional crash reports described above.
- No location data is collected.
- Photos are never used to identify people.
Permissions
- Camera: to photograph meals and scan barcodes.
- Internet: to reach Gemini, Open Food Facts and Google Play Billing.
- Photos (system picker): only the individual image you choose from the gallery is read.
- Health Connect (optional): read weight, write weight and read steps; requested only when you turn the sync on in Settings, and granted by you inside Health Connect.
- Notifications: once you allow notifications, the app sends mealtime reminders to snap breakfast, lunch and dinner, a weigh-in reminder and a weekly recap. Each can be switched off in Settings, and you can block notifications for Chewbie in your phone settings. They are scheduled on your phone; no server sends them. A meal reminder is skipped once that meal is logged, the mealtime reminders move to when you usually log each meal (worked out on your phone from your own log), and the recap's text is written on your phone from your own log.
- Rating (Google Play): after you log a meal, the app may occasionally ask Google Play to show its rating window, at most a few times a year. Google Play decides whether to show it; Chewbie never sees your rating or review.
Children
Chewbie is for adults (18+). It is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from them. The app asks for confirmation of age during setup.
Changes
